Dungeons & Dragons: Session 1 – The Journey Begins

These are my barebones notes from the first session of TNT’s weekly DnD. For the character and story backgrounds, see Session 0. All notes will be under the Dungeons & Dragons tag. I apologize to TNT in advance for boiling down the lore he worked so hard on into these scraps that don’t do the fantasy world justice.

The party started out on the road headed south to the city, when we spotted Benson the Gnome shopkeeper. He was in quite a predicament and shouting for help, as he was tied up with some purple ??? by this 2-D candy man/monster who was announcing his intent to spank all who insult King Brindle. (The actual ruler of this area is King Edgar, so who knows what the hell is going on here.)

Candy Man

Bo beelined right into the trees into hiding (very roguish). Flip did not want to get his hands dirty and was all for avoiding the situation. Then Raleigh shouted something raunchy to the candy man, and that drew attention to everyone (even Bo). Benson renewed his cries for help, and the Candy Man got additional help out of nowhere from a couple of 2-D wolves and two other creatures whose descriptions I didn’t write down. I remember one of them was a woman with big arms or something.

Combat happened. Once the good guys started winning (thanks in large part to Jhekesan’s archery skills and hunter’s mark on Candy Man, no big deal thank him later), the Candy Man ran away with Benson, who tossed a coin purse and promised that there was more where that came from. 2 other enemies got away too, which I think were one of the wolves and the someway remarkable woman enemy.

Jhekesan ended up holding on to the money in the coin purse after the group of 5 travelers didn’t decide a different way to handle receiving 5 coins. Flip inspected the purple energy things where Benson was bound but didn’t learn much (and notably did not think to keep any for later). The entire group also saw that the vegetation around the spot was also ChalkZone’d. After that, some puppy (also 2-D) bounded in

Jhekesan, continuing his distrust of beasts (including Flip’s pet crab Fold) picked him up by the scruff of the neck. The puppy continued to do cute things until Jhekesan dropped it, at which point it bounded in the direction where Candy Man and beckoned for the group to follow. Everyone voted to ignore that nonsense and head on to the city.

The group got to the city at night. The wall was defended by 2 guards. Bo borrowed a piece of paper from Jhekesan and persuaded one of the guards that we had an urgent message that only the King could hear and that we must be let in. The other guard tho did not care about that and wouldn’t have the gate raised. Jhekesan paid him 5 gold to grease the wheels, which the guard then pocketed and feigned amnesia about his promise to do anything (like the scene in War Dogs but without Jonah Hill going to the trunk of his car after).

The group decided to wait it out until the morning. Everyone but Flip made do with bedsacks and whatever on the forest floor. Flip and Fold went to an inn and slept on their own sheets.

Oh, and the group finally learned something about Gregarious Gritty: he wants to play his bagpipes.
